There’s nothing more uplifting than a bright and beautiful smile. Dental braces will not only help you achieve this by straightening your teeth, but they also do wonders for your oral health and even your self-esteem. Used appropriately, braces can prevent tooth decay and gum disease, correct bite and even improve speech impediments.

Thanks to advancements in technology and modern medicine, dental braces are now thinner, lighter, more comfortable and less prominent than before. From traditional metal braces to “invisible” ones, your dentist can prescribe the most appropriate orthodontic device for your need.

Two of the dental braces that we offer at emBRACE are the metal and ceramic braces. Listed below are their respective pros and cons.

Metal Braces

Composed of stainless steel brackets and wires, traditional metal braces are the most common type of dental braces. Though more noticeable than ceramic braces, this type is inexpensive and more effective in correcting alignment issues of the teeth.

Metal braces today are noticeably smaller and thinner than they were in the past, ensuring increased comfort for the wearer. There are now heat-activated archwires that can further help speed up the process of alignment with less pain and discomfort.

With this traditional model, you also have the freedom to be creative and express your personality through the color of the ligature bands that hold your brackets and wires in place. While this is mostly just for aesthetic purposes, it certainly makes wearing braces a lot more fun.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces, on the other hand, are less noticeable and more visually appealing with translucent or tooth-coloured brackets and wires. Made of ceramic composites, this model has proven to be tough and are said to be less painful than metal braces as they don’t irritate sensitive gums.

However, ceramic braces are bigger than metal braces and are susceptible to stains due to its whiter and more porous make-up. They are also expensive and not suitable for more extensive uses.

If you need dental braces, your orthodontist will perform a detailed evaluation of your teeth and your preferences, before determining the best treatment method to straighten out your teeth.

emBRACE Dental Surgery offers various orthodontic devices suitable for you, from traditional metal braces and ceramic braces, to Invisalign and mini implants. For more information, call (65) 6235 6325 or leave an enquiry for orthodontist Dr Tan Kok Liang at drtan@embrace.com.sg today.
